Make Hotels Greener

A new campaign to help Cyprus hotels improve their sustainability and reduce the negative impacts of tourism on the island was launched by UK sustainable tourism charity the Travel Foundation together with the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI) at the PASYDIXE conference on Friday 27 January in Nicosia.

Travel Foundation Trustee, Travelife Director and ABTA Executive John de Vial spoke about the opportunity sustainability offered to hotels, in both cutting operational costs and safeguarding Cyprus’ future as a world-class destination.

He said: Following a period of economic slowdown across Europe, and predictions of further financial turmoil ahead, there has never been a more critical time to act. Tourism-dependent businesses must ensure they are as lean and competitive as possible, while constantly improving the experience they offer to visitors.

Participating hotels will receive regular communications full of practical tips and advice on how to implement sustainable practices to benefit their business and the wider destination, as well as access to free tools and events.

The initiative is the latest in a series of Travel Foundation / CSTI projects in Cyprus that support a five-year destination partnership with the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO). The partnership aims to integrate sustainable principles into all aspects of tourism in Cyprus using a variety of means including the introduction of minimum standards for sustainability.
